Calligraphy is an art. Letters are designs.
Creating distinctive letterforms requires training of the hand, the eye, and the mind. We need to see letters differently: the separate features, figure and ground, as well as the basic elements of design in each letter, before we can begin to produce these letters.
It has been my experience in teaching calligraphy that unless the essential concepts and skills are mastered in a sequential approach, good calligraphic forms can not be realized. These lessons aim to present a system of principles for training the hand, the eye, and the mind through disciplined practice. Adapted from Sue Ann Stonesifer's book, Alphabet to Alphabet: The Art and Technique of Calligraphy, each lesson was developed from the experience of teaching Calligraphy, Typography and Design at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County and at the Baltimore School for the Arts.. |
